about

Political Data Inc (PDI)'s primary focus is on voter data for campaigns. PDI helps campaigns understand who their voters are, where they are, and helps them make smart, data-driven decisions. PDI also has a suite of political software tools to help campaigns with voter outreach, fundraising, and CRM.

overview

PDI had an existing events tool as part of a suite of volunteer management products. This tool was not frequently used by PDI customers because it suffered in usability and lacked important functionality that many political campaigns needed to manage successful events. My role for this project was to redesign the event sign up landing page and the event creation/management experience.

team

I worked with a product manger, developer, and several internal stakeholders. I was the main designer on this project, with the addition of some collaboration and feedback from other designers.

research

competitive research

I researched features and interfaces of competing political event platforms and non-political event management tools.

user research

I spoke with various campaign staffers to understand everything that goes into running and managing events, what was lacking in current political event tools, and what their highest needs were in event management.

users

There were two different sets of users for this project. First, an event attendee, who uses the campaign's event landing page to RSVP to the event. These users needed an easy way to sign up and manage their attendance to an event.

Second, the campaign admin who manage the event in PDI's SaaS platform for campaigns. These users needed to be able to configure and edit events, as well as view the event's performance.

vision

The project's vision was to redesign the current event experience— improving the usability of the product, prioritizing volunteer retention, incorporating shifted and ticketed events, and adding analytics to monitor event performance.

event attendee designs

landing page

The event attendee landing page includes event information, campaign details, and a form field for RSVPing. These events could be virtual or take place at a physical location.

rsvp Flow

This flow shows the RSVP process. Once RSVPed, the user receives a confirmation on the site and via email and/or SMS. They also receive a reminder email and/or SMS closer to the event.

Previously, PDI had a clunky volunteer event follow up methods. They offered a non-automated way of sending an SMS to a volunteer. I designed automatically triggered SMS and emails configured by the admin. This allowed campaigns to follow up with their volunteers more easily, increase event show rates, and ultimately deliver more output.

campaign admin designs

create event

The previously existing event configuration was cumbersome and difficult to use. Users were required to create event webforms from scratch each time they created an event. The new designs provided them with a template to configure and design events. One one page, users enter their event details, optionally schedule shifts or create ticketed events, and configure their communication to attendees.

shifted event

We learned that campaigns needed to create separate time blocks or shifts within an event. Previously, users could only create one time range per event.

In the new designs, I added the option to create multiple shifts within an event. Shifts are associated with a specific time range and location. Each shift could be assigned a specific activity, for example one could be a "canvassing shift" while another is a "phone banking shift". We also enabled campaigns to schedule custom recurring shifts.

manage event

Once created, users can manage and edit their events on the event detail pages. They can also view event performance, contact attendees, invite guests, and assign people to activities (i.e. Canvassing, Phone Banking, etc.). This page includes tables of all various shifts, ticket levels, and a section for planned automated communication to event attendees.

contact attendees

From the 'manage event' page, admin can contact attendees on demand via email or text message.

assign attendees to shifts

At times, campaigns will have attendees that have not yet been assigned to a shift. We provided admin the ability to assign those attendees to shifts within the platform.

outcome

After testing and iterating on these design, we launched the product. Engagement and use of the events platform grew significantly with positive feedback from clients.
